Do we actually know what does the term ‘Education’ actually means? It’s a very commonly known term which can be described as a process of facilitating knowledge. However, the term has a more profound meaning than what we literally know what education is.

Education is not only what we learn from books; however, it is actually a process of learning from your own experiences as well as from experiences of others. Socrates has rightly said, “Education is the kindling of a flame, not the filling of a vessel.” Education actually ignites that spark of creativity within us and makes us capable of putting that creativity into action to bring out the innovations and wonders in the world.

Mark Twain puts in, “I have never let my schooling interfere with my education”. Hence, we can simply define the education as what remains in our head after finishing our formal education which actually makes us an individual what we are today. It allows us to move from darkness to light with the positive vibes of wisdom, knowledge and creativity broadening our horizons to win the world.

To begin with an optimistic note about education system of India, it is truly competitive and trains students rigorously to withstand fierce competition on a worldwide scale. We must acknowledge this fact that our scholars are at par to the students abroad and this can be attributed to the rigorous trainings given in our schools and colleges.

Despite of these gleams of our education world, we must admit that Indian Education System calls for a 'makeover'. It is due to the fact that that the system is too much information-oriented and more of a spoon-feeding leaving a little scope for creativity, inventions and self-learning which is truly the need of the hour. E.M. Forster has quoted, “Spoon feeding in the long run teaches us nothing but the shape of the spoon.”

It is widely acknowledged that the learning process plays an important role in shaping one’s personality and the way he/she deals with situations of life particularly the school education contribute immensely in the development of the young minds as they step into adulthood. It is the utmost responsibility of schools to provide education that must facilitate the cultivation of a healthy thought process in children. Hence, there is a demand to revise the system without delay in order to make our students competent enough to face the challenges of the world. A famous quote of Nelson Mandela says, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

School education needs to enable the future generation to withstand the pulls and pressures of society and forge ahead amidst trials. It must instill moral values and discipline in the coming generations to enable them to become responsible and respectable human beings. The growing incidents of crimes committed by juveniles and the youth speak volumes about the flaws in our education system.

Indian Education System is not actually ‘Indian’; however, it was imposed on our country by the British with just one goal in mind- to create a population of educated clerks who could serve the British Empire better. India got independence in 1947; however, successive governments did little to bring a change in our education system especially school education.

Indian school education system is still firmly stuck with the traditional system of ‘chalk and talk’. Technology, which is the need of the hour, fails to find a mention in the policies laid out by various boards of school education. Hence, the concerned authorities must make the required attempt to revise syllabus, teaching methods, teaching material, student assessment processes, etc.

There is a tremendous change in the years 2020 in the education system because of the prevailing pandemic across the world. Through the medium of this blog, we would like to bring the attention of the concerned authorities towards the current school education system of India. We request them to take the necessary steps that are required to be taken into account to improve it keeping in mind the covid times and upcoming scenario to bring out a better school education system for all.
